I think even Disney has its limits when it comes to subtly inserting dark truths into their animation. The Aristocats begins with an act of cruelty when the butler leaves them in the countryside (where they are unlikely to survive on their own). Except for the fact he was abandoning cats, it was a metaphor for family murder. Of course, cats are considered semi-wild creatures by many people (and it was a great pun for a name
So implying the hyenas eat their cubs is probably just a bit too dark for semi-dark Disney.
But maybe I'm just fan-splaining.
